Background & Challenges

Charterhouse was founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611 on the site of the old Carthusian monastery in Charterhouse Square, Smithfield, London. It is one of the original nine English public schools as defined by the Public Schools Act of 1868.
The school was moved to its present site in Godalming, Surrey in 1872 by its then headmaster and has since expanded to grounds of over 200 acres. It remains one of England’s very best schools.

When Charterhouse contacted School Website about the possibility of working with them to develop a new online presence we were not only incredibly honored but also incredibly excited. Even more so when we learnt that Charterhouse didn’t want “just another school website”, but something that would really set the benchmark in what school websites could and should be.

Solution & Benefits

The end result, which was the culmination of 3 months very hard work, is one of the most visually engaging and interactive websites around. The site gives a genuine flavor of the school with full image backgrounds and offers a liquid layout that adapts to the users’ screen resolution. The website uses video throughout to give plenty of interactivity and also seamlessly integrates with the school’s parent portal (ISAMS). The school intranet and Enterprise Website has also been styled to mirror the website to ensure a consistent user experience.

"The new Charterhouse website, requiring the seamless integration of both the new parent portal and the video collection, was going to be a demanding project that needed to be completed within a short timeframe of four months.

Our aim was to achieve a contemporary look and feel that still portrayed the School’s history (and branding) along with a technically future-proof site that would provide a platform for new innovations. We required a comprehensive website with a structure that provided simple, user-friendly navigation. And, of course, we wanted to ‘push the boundaries’ in terms of design.

Schools Website delivered on every level. The initial presentation and negotiations were highly professional and meeting the team before making our final decision was extremely reassuring, as they were enthusiastic, creative and technically very competent. For Charterhouse this was going to be a very ‘hands on’ project as we had strong opinions about what we required and wanted to achieve. During the project we built strong and productive relationships with the team at Schools Website.
